Matt Jameson 6'1" point
guard from Newport Harbor H.S. in Orange County. Matt
was a 4 year starter and averaged 17 ppg and 7 assists
his senior year but had no scholarship offers. As of June
after graduation, he was planning on attending Tulane
and hoping to walk on there.
Matt's dad retained BG in June,
after graduation, and the
rest is history. BG talked to all schools throughout
the country who still had a scholarship and were looking
for a point guard and sent them a film package of Matt.
Those that were interested,
which included Wisconsin and Miami of Florida were informed
that Matt would also be playing in the adidas Big Time
Tournament in Las Vegas in July with Branch West, where they could see
him live.
Matt played extremely well in
Las Vegas, and Princeton, Tulsa and Navy all said they
would take him if he went to prep school for a year.
Matt declined going to prep
school and when only Miami of
Ohio offered a full scholarship for the fall, he accepted. At Miami, he has been an extremely well respected
reserve combo guard for the Redskins.
His sophomore year, when the starting
point guard was hurt and could not play, Matt started on
the road against Notre Dame, played 30 minutes and Miami
of Ohio upset the highly favored Irish.
This past year as a senior, Matt
had started approximately half the games and is considered
a tough hard nosed defender and solid all around player.
Matt fell in love with Miami of Ohio and had a wonderful
academic and social experience as well as a very rewarding
4 years in the basketball program. As
an interesting aside, Charley Coles, long time head coach
at Miami of Ohio, is in their Hall of Fame as a
player. In addition, after his senior year on the
court was over, Charley played for Bob Gottlieb who was
the player-coach of a very good AAU basketball team that
played in a number of the top post season AAU events in
Ohio, in the Unlimited Open Division. Matt
Jameson and one Bob Gottlieb is extremely proud of.
